Phoenix (June 22, 2009) – Medical science is only beginning to understand the role that the human mind plays in the healing process. In spite of all the wonderful technology available to us today, too many people still struggle to enjoy the total wellness they were meant to have in body, mind and spirit. Our bodies are designed to cooperate with nature to maintain a balanced state of vibrant health. This natural flow often becomes blocked by the negative energies that build up in the body through the stresses of life, resulting in many physical and emotional discomforts.

In my fifteen-year journey as an intuitive healer, I’ve seen first-hand how the ancient practices of the indigenous peoples of the Americas can help release these accumulated blocks and restore harmony with the loving and abundant energy that connects all living things to Madre Tierra, or Mother Earth. In the days of the Aztecs, the Mayans and the Toltecs this connection was understood by practitioners who knew how the body resonates with the essence of plants and minerals and the rhythms of nature. Whatever you may choose to call it, they also maintained an unshakable belief in the benevolent animating force that guides all of the cellular functions that allow us to grow and thrive.

Modern Latina healers who practice these ancient arts are known as Curandera, from the same Latin root where we get the English word for “cure.” Their centuries-old traditions have been handed down from one generation to the next in an unbroken chain of love. In my forthcoming book on the Curandera, I’ll explain in detail how their gifts manifest in several different forms. Some specialize in herbal cures while others focus on the health and alignment of the bones. My own gifts involve spiritual insight and guidance and the work of the Sobadora, a type of Curandera who heals with the hands through touch. As a Curandera by inheritance and by calling, it’s my spiritual duty and privilege to introduce these gifts to you as my ancestors handed them down to me.

Let me assure you that I’m not against modern medicine. Every day it seems that science enables some miraculous new way to see inside the human body and watch its innate intelligence at work. Discoveries in genetics, electronics and chemistry allow us to observe and sometimes even assist the inner workings of our bodies in ways that were unimaginable to our beloved ancestors. And yet common sense tells us that humanity is much older than science. Is it possible that we might be overlooking valuable lessons from the past simply because they were not recorded in the language of science? Medieval nonsense like the idea of a flat world makes us smile today, but other, much older beliefs in the creative power of our thoughts, the restorative properties of plants and minerals or the significance of the electromagnetic energy field that surrounds all living things are being confirmed in laboratories around the world on a daily basis.

My own experience with alternative healing began at the age of twelve when I discovered a passion for exploring the properties of plants and herbs. My Italian, Mexican and Yaqui Indian ancestry blessed me not only with a natural attraction to red wine, but also with strong Latina role models who revealed the ways of the Curandera by example. Coming from a long line of Sobadoras, I was blessed to be introduced to this way of thinking from my earliest memories. A series of life-changing events confirmed my calling and inspired me to pursue the healing ways of the Curandera.

In 1994, in a moment of deep relaxation and peace, I experienced a vision of myself standing on a pyramid in Mexico, but because my finances were limited at the time, I had no idea how I would get there. Within a few weeks a friend who knew nothing about my vision called to say that she’d been planning a group trip to Mexico City and had somehow ended up with one extra ticket. At that point I knew that I had manifested the way to Mexico. Once there I discovered that we were staying a short distance from the sacred pyramids of Teotihuacan. Through the cooperation of my friend and a caring tour guide, I soon found myself standing on top of a pyramid exactly like the one in my vision.

Other experiences have deepened my sense of connection to Spirit and helped me to develop the spiritual essence of my healing practice. While touring the awe-inspiring Veduta della Basilica Caterina di San Domenico in Siena, Italy, I sensed the presence of Saint Catherine di Siena. She revealed to me that I had been led there to meet her and that she is my spirit guide. I left there with a deep sense of peace that I am guided in my work for the highest good of those I meet. My practice as a Curandera is all about healing, empowerment, wellness and compassion.

To find a trustworthy healer where you live, ask people you know for referrals. Reputable practitioners who have nurtured their gifts with family guidance will often have strong ties to the community and Latino arts and culture. True Curandera are instruments of divine healing and each one has their own unique style. They won’t attempt to force information on you that’s not for your highest good and rarely demand large amounts of money. In my own practice, although my rates are fixed for professional body work, I will never turn anyone away who comes to me for spiritual healing because of money.

I wish you many blessings as you explore the ancient mysteries of the Curandera. Perhaps you’ll discover these gifts in yourself and seek guidance on how to develop them. Perhaps you’re seeking spiritual help to restore your body’s natural state of good health. Total wellness of body, mind and spirit is your divine birthright and you may be closer than you think to the vibrant health you desire.
